    Re-enlisted for a second tour of duty in May of 1939 with the stipulation that he and his brother James would be assigned to the same ship. Served in the Atlantic aboard the newly commissioned Destroyer USS Simms (DD-409) until the war began 7 December, 1941 when his ship departed for the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations with Task Force 17 formed around the fast carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5). Electrician's Mate 1st Class Orin Yates, along with 234 shipmates including his brother, was killed in action on May 7, 1942 when the Simms was sunk by Japanese aircraft during the opening action of The Battle of The Coral Sea. Posthumously awarded The Purple Heart Medal and entitled to The American Defense Medal, The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze battle stars, and The WWII Victory Medal. Memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines. Honored also at the WWII Memorial in Flora, Illinois.

    Notes:

    The civic minded man hadn't been able to work since he became ill last summer. He remained at his home in rural Rinard until taken to St. Louis by a DeSelm's ambulance.

    He was the town clerk in Keith Twp. for more than 20 years and sat on the Rinard Grade School board and the Flora Grade School board for another ten years.

    The well-known Republican was a deacon in the Zif Baptist church and a member of the Elks Lodge in Flora.

    He and his brother Roy, of Flora, farmed land in the rural Rinard area.

    Died:
    Earl A. Yates, 54, a well known Rinard farmer died in a St. Louis hospital.

    Mr. Yates, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Guy Yates, had been a patient at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis since Nov. 25, suffering from cell complications in the brain.

    Earl married Henry, Dorothy L. on 17 Mar 1945 in Wayne County, Illinois. Dorothy (daughter of Henry, Ralph Russell and Harmon, Edna Zora) was born on 6 May 1925; died on 15 Jun 1998; was buried in Bunker Cemetery, Rinard, Wayne County, Illinois. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
