    He attended Wheeler and Thomas Elementary Schools and graduated from Clay City High School in 1962. After graduation he worked at Wilkins Chevrolet and Eagleson Oldsmobile and Cadillac in Olney, Illinois. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1964 with an AAS in Automotive. In the spring of 1969 he started teaching Automotive at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He taught there through the summer of 1970 and transferred to Olney Central College when the Automotive Program was moved. In 1983, he received his BS Degree in Occupational Education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. In June of 1993, he graduated from Chicago State University with his MS Degree in Occupational Education. He retired in December of 1999 after teaching 30 years of Automotive at Olney Central College.

    Ray was a member of NACAT (North American Council of Automotive Teachers) and a Charter Member of ICAIA (Illinois College Automotive Instructors Association). He was a board member of the West Richland School District for 18 years.

    He was an area pilot and a member of the Olney Area Pilots Association, EAA Chapter 1304, Clay County Pilots Association Chapter 16, and the Tennessee Short Wing Piper Club. He had the opportunity to fly over 300 area students in the Young Eagles Program in his Piper Tri-Pacer Airplane.

    Ray was past Moderator of the Fairfield Congregational Christian Church Association in Fairfield, Illinois. He is a member and Deacon of the Forrest Ridge Congregational Christian Church southeast of Noble, Illinois.
