Marjorie J. Scaife wrote: In 1971, my mother and I visited Clarabelle (Thomas) Scrugham in Clay City looking for Thomas information. Clarabelle called her brother Ralph L. Thomas. He came over at once. I spent several hours scribbling as fast as I could while he told me the stories reported throughout this history. I've tried to credit him as the source.

The most information I received about The Thomas' departure from Virginia during Civil War came from Ralph. The stories had been told to him by his father. I listened to stories from others but always felt Ralph's were probably the most accurate because his father, John, was the oldest Thomas child when all the events occurred, and, that John probably had had to help his mother with the five other younger children in their flight from Virginia.

Note: I never found any reference to such refugees in reading about Rockbridge County. However, I found one reference in a book about Rockingham County that told the same story--practically word for word. Records verify that our Thomas' were in Rockbridge County so this story is not reproduced here.

Ralph L. Thomas was a retired Pure Oil employee at the time of his death. He was a member of the Clay City Christian Church and the Clay City Masonic Lodge.

Doris worked at Sparton Manufacturing Company in Flora, IL for many years. She was a member of the Clay City Christian Church, in Clay City, IL, the Parkview Christian Church in Pekin, IL and the Ridgecrest Christian Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Doris married Rosenlieb, Edward William in Jan 1946. Edward (son of Rosenlieb, August Otto Jr. and Forester, Viola Belle) was born on 21 Oct 1921 in Monroe County, Ohio; died on 29 Nov 1968 in Flora, Clay County, Illinois; was buried in Clay City Cemetery, Clay City, Clay County, Illinois. Glen attend Clay City High School. Served in the Korean War. Married Mona Lee Graham on June 24, 1955, at the First Christian Church in Flora, IL. He had three sons, Allen Thomas, Steve (wife, Deanna) Thomas and Phil Thomas of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren, Glen Allen and Jeremy, Michael, Nicole, Mark and LaRecia Thomas, He was in the timber/lumber business
