    Harold R. “Boscoe” Cantrell, age 92, of Xenia, Illinois, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016, at the home of his daughter in Port St. John, Florida.

    Harold was born April 8, 1924, in Deer Grove, Illinois, the son of Burl R. and Mae G. (Renner) Cantrell. He married Dorothy Marie Sanders on August 26, 1947, in Louisville, Illinois, and she preceded him in death August 25, 1966. Harold later married Vivian (Higgason) Wyman on September 10, 1970, and she preceded him in death on September 13, 2008.

    Harold served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He farmed and worked on construction projects, and served as a tax assessor and Garden Hill Township road commissioner, and had been a member of the VFW, American Legion and Central Laborer’s Union. He was often thinking of friends and family, and took time to visit with others including those in nursing homes for the hope of bringing a smile with a joke, and loved reminiscing about the times spent laughing over many windy tales told at Knapp’s in Xenia. He enjoyed fishing, working in his garden and taking rides out in the countryside looking at the deer and wildlife.

    He is survived by his children: Walter (Barbara) Cantrell of Plano, Dale (Janice) Cantrell of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Rita Byrum of Oakland City, Indiana, and Charlotte (Scott) Cummins of Port St. John, Florida; a step-daughter: Phyllis (Ken) Hill of Riverdale, Michigan, including her 3 sons: Todd Hill, Tracy Hill, and Stacy Hill and their families; a brother: Howard (Frances) Cantrell of Xenia; 9 grandchildren: Matthew (Danielle) Cantrell of Round Lake Beach, Deanna Cantrell and Michael Cantrell both of Plano, Chad Cantrell and Brad (Dana) Cantrell both of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Carl (April) Byrum-Mann of Haubstaudt, Indiana, Don Byrum-Mann of Maryland, Ryan (Anne) Cummins of West Hills, California, and Autumn Cummins of Jacksonville, Florida; and 8 great-grandchildren: Brittany Cantrell, Lily Doukas-Cummins, Connor Cummins, Cody Mann, Ava Mann, Will Mann, Madeline Mann, and Bennett Mann. He was preceded in death by his parents and both wives.

    A funeral service for Harold R. “Boscoe” Cantrell will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Burial will follow in Powers Cemetery, Xenia, with military honors.

    Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon-1p.m.until the hour of service on Sunday at the funeral home.

    Memorials are suggested to D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans).

    Military Service:
    Entered active service on 14 March 1944. Completed boot camp at Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois. Assigned to and served aboard the Cleveland Class Light Cruiser USS Santa Fe (CL-60). Engaged in operations against the enemy in Western New Guinea, Mariana Islands, Western Caroline Islands, Leyte, Luzon, Iwo Jima and Okinawa Gunto. Earned The Combat Action Medal (retroactive award), The Navy Unit Commendation, The American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 silver and 2 bronze battle stars, The WWII Victory Medal and The Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 bronze stars. Honorably discharged as a Seaman Second Class on 9 May 1946 at the Separation Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.

    Howard E. Cantrell, age 90, of rural Xenia, passed away at his home on March 15, 2018.

    Howard was born on March 4, 1928, to Burl R. and Mae (Renner) Cantrell of rural Xenia, Illinois. He attended Walnut Branch and Hickory Flat schools prior to attending Xenia High School for three years. He then graduated from Flora High School in 1948.

    Howard was a Korean War Veteran, serving as an Army artillery gunner. Upon his return from Korea, he married his high school sweetheart, Frances Ellen Goff, on April 20, 1952. After their marriage, they lived in Tomah, Wisconsin while Howard completed his service.

    After his discharge they returned to the Xenia area where they purchased 80 acres and began a livelihood of farming. Howard retired from farming in 1993 and was later elected to two terms as road commissioner for Garden Hill Township. Howard attended Powers General Baptist Church; he was known as someone always willing to help a neighbor in need.

    Howard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances, and their four children: Rhonda (Mike) Sanders, Kala (Larry) Badger of Taylors, Brenda (Greg) Jones and Kevin (Kim) Cantrell. Howard is also survived by grandchildren Eric Sanders, Michelle Sanders, Scott Sanders, Mark Sanders, Nicole Sanders, Zach (Hannah) Badger, Luke Badger, Miranda (Eric) Dennis, Kory (Katherine) Cantrell and Jesse (Carissa) Cantrell; and seven great grandchildren. Five nieces, two nephews, and one sister-in-law also survive.

    Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, three brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and a nephew.

    A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2018, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Sunday evening and from 12:30 pm until the hour of service on Monday at the funeral home.

    Private interment will be in Powers Cemetery, Xenia.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kory Cantrell Leukemia Treatment Fund.
