- Bernard "Bo" S. Esser, 89, Washington, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012.
Bernard was born to the late Bernard H. Esser and wife Amelia May 9, 1923, at their home in Washington.
He grew up in Washington, graduating from St. Francis Borgia in 1941. After high school, Bernard attended the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He continued his education with Purdue, and then Columbia University in New York, where he graduated as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.
During World War II Bernard served in the Pacific Theater, after coming back home he met his future wife, Sadie Crackel, who was an Army nurse. They married June 26, 1947, at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington.
Bernard worked as a pharmacist at Schroeder Drugs from 1947 until 1990. He also was active with the East Central College Foundation for 20 years, and was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Elks.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Glen A. Esser; one granddaughter, Stacey Copeland; one brother, Tony Esser; and two sisters, Laurabelle Penney and Mary Beth Klemm.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Sadie M. Esser; three daughters, Janice Esser, Springfield, Judy Copeland and husband Terry, Union, and Jane Montgomery and husband Marty, St. Louis; five grandchildren, Rebecca Copeland, Laura Bockhorst, and Andrew, Marcus and Tara Montgomery; five great- grandchildren, Tyler, Kirsten, Connor, Carter and Aiden; other relatives and many friends.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1014 Madison Ave., Washington, MO 63090 Monday, Dec. 24, at 10 a.m. Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 1206 Jefferson St., Washington.
Memorial donations to the East Central College Glen Esser Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 387, Union, MO 63084 are preferred.
The family was served by Miller Funeral Home, Washington.
