    Shirley was a caring, kind, Christian woman who was always looking for an opportunity to help others. She was a member of Flora Assembly of God Church where she served as church secretary for many years. Her church family was very dear to her heart. Shirley enjoyed singing and playing music, attending family get-togethers, gardening and tending to her rock garden, and looked forward to visiting The Country Closet. All of her grandchildren were special to her from oldest to youngest.

    Military Service:
    Entered active service as a draftee on October 7, 1944 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Completed basic infantry training and qualified in the military occupational specialty of Rifleman (MOS 745). Departed the continental U.S. on April 16, 1945 bounnd for the European Theater of Operations. Upon arrival, assigned to and served with Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd "Old Guard" Infantry Regiment (a non-divisional unit) which was attached to the 106th ‘Golden Lion' Infantry Division at war's end in Europe. Participated in the subsequent occupation of Germany and eventually became a squad leader (MOS 812). Earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany). Honorably discharged as a Private First Class on June 4, 1946 at the separation center, Fort Sheridan.

    Since he was attached to the 106th, did he wear that shoulder patch? Normally he would not, but what was the patch of his parent unit?
