    Notes:

    Hugh David Stanford, second son of Austin W. and Rachel Stanford, was born south of Clay City, IL on August 23, 1874. He departed this life October 12, 1959 at the age of 85 years one month and 19 days. Almost all of his entire life was spent as a farmer in Clay and Wayne Counties.

    In 1895 he was first married to Laura Jenkins, and to this union were born two children; Murrell Stanford of Sharon, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Spencer Schoonover of Louisville, IL. Laura died in 1902.

    On January 14, 1906 he was united in marriage to Bertha Halterman, who survives. To this union were born eight children; Russell Stanford of Sunnyvale, CA, Orlie Stanford of Ashland, KY, Mrs. Eddie McHenry of Xenia, IL, Mrs. Donald Cooper of Cherry Valley, IL, Mrs. Harlan Purdum of Nanuet, NY, Mrs. Charles Plumb of Overland Park KS, Mrs. Lester Greer of Mt. Vernon, IL and Johnnie Hugh, who died at the age of 2 1/2 years.

    He professed faith in Christ as a young man. In 1912 he and his wife were both baptized into the membership of Bloom Baptist Church, where he was an active member as long as his health permitted.

    Besides his wife and nine children, he is survived by 31 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

    Hugh married Jenkins, Laura Ellen in 1895. Laura was born on 20 Oct 1878; died on 22 Mar 1902; was buried in Kneff Cemetery, Clay City, Clay County, Illinois. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Austin W. Stanford was born in Tippecanoe County, IN and moved to Clay County, IL in 1850. He was united in marriage to Rachael Stanford November 28, 1865.

    Four children were born of this union: Homer B., Hattie N,. Hugh D., and Sarah A Stanford.

    His wife died May 9, 1879.

    He then married Harriet R. Blackburn December 8, 1879. To this union six children were born: Ada R., Norman A., Brooksy E., Nora H., C. Lester, and Loyd E.





    Austin was selected as one of the honor guards in charge of bringing President Lincoln's body back to Illinois for burial.
