He met Margarete Kunigunde Seyfferth in Bayreuth where they were married on 14 January 1950. Together, Konrad and Margarete overcame the hardships of post-war reconstruction and began the chore of building a family. Into their lives was born a daughter, Karin. Konrad was a good, hard working, man who supported his family by working as a baker, and since 1961, as a delivery truck driver for the Holtz printing firm. In the summer of 1989, Konrad and Margargete were visiting their daughter Karin and her family in Aurora, Colorado. Konrad especially enjoyed visiting with his beloved grand-daughter Stephanie. During this well-deserved vacation, Konrad spotted a fire at a neighbor's house. After sounding the alarm, he rushed to put out the fire and to save the house. While fighting the fire, he was suddenly and tragically taken from us. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, who loved life and those around him, he was always helpful. He died as he lived --- helping others. Goodbye, Vati. May you at last rest in peace.

    Notes:

Michael fought in Austria in World War II and rose to the rank of Feldwebel (Sergeant).

He told the following stories to Carl Wayne Gray:

He said that he would cry whenever he lost a soldier. He had gotten false teeth while in the army. When the war was over, German units were disbanded and the soldiers got home by any means necessary. As he prepared for the long trek from Austria to Bayreuth, Germany, he put his false teeth in his mess kit so that they would not get broken. The farther he walked, the heavier his military equipment became. Slowly, he began to discard t the uncomfortable gear. One of the first items to be tossed was his leather equipment belt and harness. Eventually, he threw away his heavy overcoat as the weather got warmer. After he safely arrived home, he wanted to show his false teeth to his relatives. Only then did he realize that he had lost them when he threw away his mess kit.

We always got a chuckle out of that story.

He lived for many years at Holbein Strasse 6, Bayreuth, Germany. Due to ill health, he later lived in a nursing home in Bishofsgruen, Germany.
