| 10354 | Vivian Fitzgerald, 87, of Flora, IL, departed this life on February 22, 2010. She was born September 6, 1922 in Flora, IL, the daughter of Charles and Goldie (Dobbs) Pearce. She married Carl Fitzgerald on November 17, 1940 in Charleston, MO. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1991. They were the parents of one son, Ronnie Fitzgerald, who departed this life in 1988. Vivian spent her entire life in the Flora area, having worked at International Shoe Company for 24 years, and was the manager of Fashion Lane for 10 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Win-A-Couple Class of the church. Vivian enjoyed her family. She is survived by 2 granddaughters: Shelly Makame of Indianapolis, IN and Ann Fogarty & husband Ed of Washington, IN; 3 brothers: Edwin Pearce of Flora, Kenneth Pearce of Flora, and Bill Pearce & wife Joan of Flora; 8 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in by her parents, husband, one son (Ronnie), and 2 brothers (Norman & Dick). Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Minister Carson Root will officiate the services. Burial will be in the Clay City Cemetery. Mrs. Abbott was born May 24, 1920 in Noble, the daughter of Charles and Anna Mae Newton. She married George Weldon Abbott. He preceded her in death on March 23. 1984. Mrs. Abbott was a member of Clay City Christian Church of Clay City and the Clay City Rebekahs. Vivian was born May 11, 1922 in Edwards County, Illinois, the daugther of Wilbur Leonard and Bertha Lorene (Schrader) Bare. She was a stay-at-home mom and then worked at the Olney Garment Factory and the Olney Care Center before volunteering at the Salvation Army. She is survived by her children, Kay (Don) Novak of Georgetown, IN; Dale (Shirley) Combs of Carbondale, IL; Carolyn (Gene) Iffert of Ingraham, IL; Glenn (Cindy) Combs of Marion, OH; and daughter-in-law, Linda Combs of Dundas; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; Brother, Don Bare of Olney; and sisters, Pat (Jim) Ginder and Faye (Sue) Harmon of Olney. | 10357 | Vivian Maxine Tolliver, 102, went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2022. She passed away at the Flora Gardens Care Center. Vivian was born May 24, 1919 to William and Harriett (Bible) Rinehart in Louisville Township. She married George A. Tolliver on August 28, 1937. They enjoyed camping and shared their love of music around a camp fire where he often would get his guitar and sing. They shared 62 years together before his passing in 1999. She was a hard worker. Having lived through the depression, she always gave 100% to whatever job she held. She worked mostly in factories and retired from Four Sisters Sewing Factory. Her faith was a big part of her life and she was a member of the Hoosier Prairie Baptist Church and later the Louisville Baptist Church. She loved spending time in the garden and helping her kids and grandkids with any project they had. The later years were spent working Sudoku puzzles, reading, and listening to music. She leaves behind a daughter, Jane (Bill) Stanford of Flora; a sister, Linda (Joe) Boswell of Louisvilleeven ; a son-in-law, Leo Bible of Louisville; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Vivian was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Bible, a son, Ronald Tolliver, grandson, Anthony "Tink" Tolliver, sisters and brothers-in-law Dora and Harold Thompson, Mattie and Bert Leonberger, Jean and Dudley Winn, and Harriett and Dempsey Jones. As per her request, a graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at the Hoosier Prairie Cemetery, rural Louisville with Pastor Kelly Carruthers officiating. Walter "Ray" Ames was born July 15, 1937 in Crawford Co., IL to Walter Ray Ames, Sr. and Catherine (DeWitt). He married the love of his life, his best friend, Vera "Pat" (Sampson) on April 18, 1983 and Vera preceded him in death on December 23, 2016. Ray was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was proud of his NRA membership and enjoyed trap shooting. Ray took pleasure in watching all sports, especially baseball and football. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 700 N. Silver St., with the Rev. Jan Laws and the Rev. David McNabb officiating. Summers-Kistler Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Mr. Rogers was born January 23, 1931, the only son of Walter E. Sr. and Geneva (Crum) Rogers. He graduated from Olney Township High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955. He was a lifetime resident of Olney. Being of the Christian faith, he was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. For many years he was a church elder and church treasurer. He served four consecutive terms as trustee for Olney Township and was a member of the American Legion for 56 years. Walter was married to Sharon K. Steele, who preceded him in death in 1981. On March 17, 1989, he married Beverly J. Campbell. She survives along with one son, Michael C. (Madeleine) Rogers and grandsons, Logan M. and William C., of Livingston, Mont. and one daughter, Jaime L. Rogers of Crestone, Colo. He will be sadly missed by seven stepdaughters: Kim (Dr. James) Ligon, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Lori (Walter) Myers, of Lenoir, N.C., Ann (Randy) Christopherson, of Green Bay, Wis., Erin Schnepper, of Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Lisa Schnepper (Scott Miller), of Winona, Minn., Amy Jo Johnson (Louis Kapp), of Gurnee, Cassie Schnepper, of Park City; and two stepsons: Daniel (Kimberly) Schnepper, of Hudson, Wis., and Darin (Colleen) Schnepper, of Lancaster, Wis. Dearly loved by all of his family, he was called Grandpa Buddy by Chris and Patti Christopherson, Tara and Cory Beaton, Tereasa and David Prince, Megan O'Malley, Luke Wenzel, Adam Wenzel, Matthew Wenzel, Patrick Johnson, Ian Johnson, Haley Schnepper, Wesley Schnepper, Bindi Schnepper, Gavin Schnepper, Dylan Schnepper, Darien Schnepper, and great-grandson, Paul Christopherson. He will also be missed by his extended family, Lee and Sheryll Mitchell, and all of the people with whom he worked for over 21 1/2 years at Pool's True-Value. He married Opal Clark, who survives. Mr. Yelch was a retired pipe fitter and a member of the Lawsonian Church. Other survivors include a son, Billy, at home; three daughters, Marsha Groff, Lawrenceville, Mrs. Brenda Rodrick, Claremont, and Mrs. Marjorie Robbins, Sumner; three sisters, Mrs. Joy Cullison, Ithica, N.Y., Mrs. Blanche Johnson, Missouri, and Mrs. Beulah Woodruff, Bridgeport; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. | 10385 | Walter Gill, farmer. P. O. Clay City, was born in Yorkshire, England, on April 18, 1827, and is a son of "William and Sallie (Littlewood) Gill, both of whom are now dead. He was the eldest of a family of thirteen children, of whom but four are n now living, William, Ruth and Eliza, in England, and Walter, our subject. The latter received a common English education in the old country, and at an early age was apprenticed to learn the mason and stone-cutter's trade. He worked at that trade in England until about twenty-three, and then came to this country, landing in the city of New York in the summer of 1850. He worked in that city at his trade the following fall and winter, and in the next two years he worked in different cities in the Atlantic and Middle States. In 1853, he came to Illinois and began working as a contractor for mason and stone work on the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad. He worked on that road for two years, and then went to Missouri and there worked on the North Missouri, which was then under process of construction. He only worked there for one year, and then returned to Illinois. He settled in Stanford Township, Clay County. He first purchased 120 acres which he has since increased to 360 acres, situated in Sections 10, 15, 21 and 22. Has about 230 acres in cultivation; also pays some attention to stock-raising, handling about fifty head of cattle, and considerable amount of other stock in a year. Mr. Gill was married in Clay City Township, Clay County, on March 15, 1855. to Mary Ann Evans, a daughter of Seth and Ketorah Evans, early pioneer settlers in this county, and already noticed in the history of Clay City Township. Mrs. Gill was born in this county on October 5, 1827, and was the mother of seven children, live of whom are now livingJonas in Flora, William in Flora, Francis at Xenia, Charles in Louisville, and Oscar at Mill Shoals. Her death took place in March, 1866, and on September 26, 1869, Mr. Gill was married near Lawrenceville, Lawrence Co., Ill., to Miss Mary Jane Gray, a daughter of George and Mary Ann (Doty) Gray, both natives of Virginia. This lady was also born in that State on January 1, 1840, and to her have been born five children, three of whom are now living, viz., Cora L., Ida R. and Emma J. Mr. Gill is a strong Democrat. | 10390 | Walter R. "Walt" Sledge, age 83, of Flora, IL died at 5:40 AM on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Walt was born on December 1, 1927 in Cole, IL to Emory G. and Mattie (Riley) Sledge. He was united in marriage to Marilyn I. Hoskins on February 23, 1973 in Flora and they celebrated 38 anniversaries together. Marilyn preceded him in death on December 4, 2010. Walt Sledge was the founder and president of Sledge Drilling and Walt Sledge Producing Company. After retiring from his companies, he became a partner in Futures Golf Club in Puryear, Tennessee. When he sold his interest in this course, he purchased and operated Flora Golf and Country Club. Walt became interested in golf as a young caddy and later rose to become a top ranked amateur. He enjoyed the game throughout his life, even taking time to play a round on his wedding day in 1973. Walt was an avid fisherman and talked about plans to get his boat on the lake again soon. He was a loyal fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He served in the Navy during World War II and was of the Baptist faith. His memberships included the Flora Elks, Flora American Legion Post #14, Flora VFW Post #3999, Flora Moose Lodge, the NMN Club, and the Flora Golf & Country Club. He loved his family, and especially "his girls." Because of their dedication, he was able to remain in the comfort of his home during the later days of his illness. Walt is survived by two sons: Donald Sledge and John Conner Jr.; two daughters: Vicky Evans and Cathy S. Kieta; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a brother: Bob Sledge; two sisters-in-law: Betty Sledge and Carolyn Sehie; and good friend Lenny Henson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Marilyn), a son (Ricky Sledge), a daughter (Elizabeth Ann Conner), and a brother (Dee L. Sledge). Funeral services for Walt Sledge were held at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Pastor Mike Evans officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora, with military honors. | 10391 | Walter Samuel Marsh, 66, passed away at his home near Noble Sunday after a lingering illness of four years duration. Mr. Marsh was born in Bradley County, Ark., but made his home in Richland County for a number of years. He was a consistent member of the M. E. Church. In 1888 he was married to Miss Corinda Mayo and to this union two sons and one daughter were born. The mother, daughter and one son preceded him to the grave. One son, Edward survives. In 1907 Mr. Marsh was married to Miss Tennie McDowell, who survives him. Their two children both died in infancy. Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. | 10393 | Wanda arrived in Richland County at the age of ten when her father was relocated with the Pure Oil Company. Her family lived in the Pure Oil camps provided by the company for their employees. She was a devoted mother to her two children who enjoyed traveling with her family to the Ozarks and visiting relatives in Los Angeles. Wanda took pleasure in gardening and growing flowers. | 10395 | Wanda Ferne Barnhart, 88, of Owensboro passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was born December 9, 1925 in Clay City, Illinois to the late William Shannon and Rosa Holman. She was a member of Settle Memorial Methodist Church, and retired as secretary for Mike Wells Architect at age 83. She was recently a volunteer at the Elizabeth Munday Center. Preceding her in death is her husband, Leslie A. "Barney" Barnhart, and granddaughter, Meredith Howell. Ferne was an amazing, loving, funny, stubborn, generous, spunky, hard working, card playing, sports loving, singing and bowling woman. She was loved by her family and many others beyond that. The highlight of her life was being able to take her whole family on an Alaskan cruise in 2006. She was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal and Owensboro High School Red Devil fan. In addition to sports, she thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandsons. Survivors include her children, James Holman (Sherry) Barnhart of Bloomington, IN, Deborah Lynn (John) Keelin of Madisonville, KY, Diana Lee Barnhart (Tibor Horvath) of Brentwood, CA, Amanda Howell (Tina Maloney) of Owensboro, KY, and Rebecca Jo Barnhart of Carlisle, England; grandchildren, Shanna (Brandon) Lahti, Mark (Abby) Keelin, Samantha Howell, Paul Barnhart, Holly Barnhart, Jeremy Kuzemchak, Andrea Horvath, and Forest Horvath; twin great grandsons, John Mark and Job Matthew Keelin; and a sister, Kathryn Crackel of Clay City, IL. Services are 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro. Bailey during a ceremony at the Clay City First Baptist Church, and they have enjoyed spending 33 wedding anniversaries together. Wanda had worked at Sparton Manufacturing and Bel-Tronics. She was an excellent cook, and very much enjoyed playing bingo. She is survived by her husband, a sister, a nephew, a niece, and two cousins.
