      NEWTON - Joseph J. Volk, 81, of Newton died 6:29 a.m. Sunday (May 29, 2005) in Richland Care & Rehab, Olney.

      Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Wendelin, with the Rev. Father David Braun and Rev. Father Barry Harmon officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Wendelin, with military rites by Olney Veterans Organization. Summers-Kistler Funeral Home, Olney, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Bishops Pro Life, Teutopolis; or Holy Cross Catholic Church.

      Mr. Volk was born June 8, 1923, in Bogota, the son of William and Sophia Dorn Volk. He was retired owner and operator of Volk Fertilizer, Wakefield. He was affiliated with Holy Cross Catholic Church. Mr. Volk was a Navy veteran and a member of American Legion in Olney and Knights of Columbus, fourth degree. He married Petronilla "Pat" Blank on May 6, 1947.

      Surviving are his wife; sons, Lee Volk and wife Sue, Bill "Wicker" Volk and wife Jude and Jeff Volk and wife Laura, all of Newton; daughters, Trudi Volk of Carbondale; Vicki Stuckey and husband Mike of Olney; Marge Horton and husband Chuck of Argenta; Sue Hess and husband Cliff of Laurel, Miss.; Dee Bower and husband Bob of Wheeler; Roxanne Pitcher and husband Brent of Montrose; Vita Kistner of Newton; brothers, Delbert Volk and Neil Volk, both of Olney; Gilbert Volk of Ingraham; Odillo Volk of Canton, Ohio; sister, Lucille Dallmier of Willow Hill; 29 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joseph Dean Volk; grandson, Nick Volk; son-in-law, Chris Kistner; infant brothers, Clarence, Raymond and Edward; brothers, Urban Volk and Father Bill Volk; and sisters, Annette Weber and Kathryn Fehrenbacher.
