      Henry V. Riggs was born about 1842 in Wabash County, Illinois where he resided and enlisted at age 19 on August 5, 1861 in Xenia, Illinois. He was mustered in as a Private on August 10, 1861 at Camp Butler, Illinois by Captain Gamaliel Hoskinson for three years.

      He was a farmer by occupation and unmarried at enlistment. He was 5’ 7” tall and had black hair, hazel eyes and a dark complexion. He reenlisted on January 30, 1864 as a Veteran at Scottsboro, Alabama by Lt. Summers. He was promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1865.

      He was discharged from the army on July 24, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky by Captain Alexander. In December, 1878 he received a pension for $4 per month for a wound to the left hip. He is buried in the Clay City Cemetery in Clay County, Illinois.
