	Upon enlisting into the War of the Rebellion, Mr. Cotterell was 5' 10" tall, he had light-colored hair, had blue eyes, and had a light complexion. He was living in Claremont, Richland County, Illinois, as a farmer. He enlisted into Company H, 130th Illinois Infantry on 09 Sep 1862 in Camp Butler, Sangamon County, Illinois. He was mustered into federal service the same day and location as a Private. The 130th Illinois Infantry was consolidated with 77th Illinois Infantry between 14-25 January 1865. Private Cotterell was transferred to Company B, 77th Illinois Infantry. He was then captured and became a Prisoner of War by Confederate forces. The 77th Illinois Infantry was mustered out on 11 July 1865 and the 130th Illinois Infantry was revived for mustering out. During his confinement, he was re-transferred to Company F, 130th (Revived) Illinois Infantry and was mustered out before the regiment stood up on 17 June 1865 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.
