- Jerry Wayne Travis passed away on Sunday, Dec. 25 at his home in Olney, Ill., after a great day of celebrating with his family.
Jerry was born in Olney, Ill. on June 1, 1944. He was the son of John and Hazel (Kuhlig) Travis. He married Carol Struble on Feb. 23, 1964. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2007. He later married Gayla Adams on May 26, 2012.
Jerry graduated from Noble High School in 1962. He made a career as a Union carpenter. He served as a foreman at E.H. Montgomery Construction in Vincennes, Ind. for many years, where he oversaw the building of several schools, hospitals and banks in the two-state area. His last two union construction jobs were building the Richland County Elementary School and the Lawrence County Correctional Center.
In his younger years, Jerry loved to play and coach mens slow pitch softball, where he was a competitive pitcher. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and enjoyed watching western movies. He loved hunting quail, coyotes and pheasants, as well as fishing.
Jerry was a former member of the Olney Southern Baptist Church, where he enjoyed serving as a Deacon and teaching Sunday School. He is currently a member of Zif Missionary Baptist Church. Jerry was also passionate about studying the book of Revelation.
Jerry loved to attend the various events his kids and grandkids participated in. He traveled to many sporting events, cattle shows and other activities the family was involved in. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.
Jerry is survived by his wife Gayla Travis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kerry and Janice Travis, of Oblong, and Rodney and Janilyn Travis, of Olney; four grandchildren, Carley Travis, Camryn Travis, Connor Travis, Chase Travis; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny Joe and Donna Travis; brother-in-law and sister-and-law, Abe and Phyllis Struble; step son and daughter, Bud and Connie Adams, David and Kate Stanker; step grandchildren, Justina Coleman, Josh Adams, Courtney Wilson, Janie Brunson; and great step grandchildren, Trevor and Emily Coleman, Jayce and Maddie Adams, Gabby and Zak Wilson, Charlee and Cami Brunson.
Preceding Jerry in death was his first wife and his parents.
A celebration of Jerrys life will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney, Illinois, with a visitation beginning two hours prior service time from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Crest Haven Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital or Oblong FFA.
