    • WAYNE CITY -- Art Barnard, 92, died at 4:37 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, in Wayfair Nursing Center in Fairfield.

      He was known as an independent businessman, cattle buyer, trucker and founder of the livestock auction market in Wayne City.

      He was a member of Wayne City Baptist Church.

      Art was born Oct. 29, 1921, in the Crisp community, eight miles north of Wayne City, to Arthur and Mae (Tolbert) Barnard.

      He was a graduate of SIU Carbondale; and a World War II Army combat veteran serving with the 100 Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge.

      He was united in marriage Oct. 16, 1949, in Carbondale, to Harriett Gertrude Barkley.

      Survivors include two sons, Barkley Barnard and his wife, Denise, of Fairfield and Mark Barnard of Wayne City; three granddaughters, Kassie (Mark) Towle of Quartz Hill, Calif., Jessica (William) Peabody of Tucson, Ariz., and Marlissa (Tyler) Boyles of Olney; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Doris Arnold; nephew, Leon (Dixie) Barnard; three nieces, Joyce Hawthorne, Kay Meritt and Sandy (Allen) Simpson; beloved friend and companion, June Staley of Carbondale; and dedicated care-giver, Tess Bailey.

      He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett; parents; brothers, Estel and Lavern Barnard; and sister, Florence Bullard.

      Services for Arthur Barnard Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, in Wayne City Baptist Church at Meadow and Walnut streets in Wayne City with the Rev. John Little officiating. Burial will be in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 30, at the church.

      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to DAV Chapter 80 -- Disabled American Veterans, Thomason Cemetery or Wayne City Bap-tist Church.

      Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.
