  • Notes
    • John Robert Coan, 99, passed away peacefully at his son’s home on Saturday, May 25, 2019, surrounded by family.

John was born April 28th, 1920 in Richland County to Frank and Bertha (Derler) Coan, the third of their thirteen children. He married Alice “Tommy” York on September 21, 1957 in Eureka, IL. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2000.

John served in the US Army during WWII in the 32nd Red Arrow Infantry Division, honored with many accolades, including a Purple Heart and Silver Star. Big John was the owner of Coan Trucking in Olney. while he committed many years to this venture, he was most proud of his family. He never missed the opportunity for a card game with his brothers and sisters. When his siblings weren’t available, he continued till the end to enjoy a good game of cards with many men in the local area, most of them young enough to be his sons or even grandsons. He loved family trips, especially when we travelled to Michigan to visit his brothers.

With nearly 100 years here on this earth, John has been loved by many. John will continue to be loved and remembered by his children, Becky Davis, Jo Ann Coan, Greg Coan and son-in-law, John Luke; brother, Lawrence (Janice) Coan; grandchildren, Tabatha (Zack) Slater, Angela (David) Zuber, Destini Coan, Koy Stevens; great-grandchildren, Noah Perry, Hunter Perry, Emma Slater, John Slater, and Luke Slater; and special caregiver, Gina Gantenbein.

John left this earthly home, looking forward to being welcomed by his wife, Tommy; daughter, Donna Luke; and grandsons, Micheal “Scott” Cantrell and David Davis.

We’re certain there was a card game waiting with his siblings, Vern, Mary, Emma, Evelyn, Francis Gene, Rosalee, Harry, Julia, Phillip, Walter, and Bertha.

Memorials can be made to the Olney VFW.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney, with a visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Zack Slater will be officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Josephs Cemetery in Olney. Full Military Rites will be performed at the graveside.
