    On Veterans' Day, 2005, the city of Flora, Illinois dedicated a memorial to all known Clay County, Illinois World War II Veterans.

    Located on the south side of the city library, this is a copy of the brochure honoring that event.

    • Ellsworth M. Duke, 80, of Flora, IL, formerly of Cisne, died September 7, 2004, at his home.

      He was born March 3, 1924 in Wayne County, the son of Clinton M. and Rada Shaw Duke. He married Margaret J. Mitchell December 11, 1944 in Henderson, KY.

      He was owner operator for 40 years of Duke Oil Co. in Cisne, a World War II Army veteran serving from 1943-1946, and a member of the First Christian Church of Flora. He was also a lifetime member of Flora VFW, Flora American Legion, Anthony Doherty Masonic Lodge, past commander of Cisne American Legion, 20 year member of Cisne Volunteer Fire Dept., Cisne Village Board, Mt. Erie State Bank, and a 50 year member of Flora Elks Lodge.

      Survivors include his wife; a daughter Jill Harrell; brother and Sisters, Gladys Perkins, Earl Duke, Erma Kennedy, Roy Duke, Doris Hess, and Wilma Endicott; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

      Preceding him in death were his parents, two sons, Mike and Pat Duke; a grandson, Clint, and two brothers, Ellery and Ted.

      Funeral services were held at Frank and Bright Funeral Home with burial in the Cisne Cemetery.
