    • Mary Maye Hemphill died peacefully at her family home in Flora, Illinois, on Saturday, September 24, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Maye was born in Clay County, Illinois, on April 3, 1920, to John Henry and Bertie Mitchell.

Maye and Harry James Hemphill were joined in holy matrimony on the 24th day of May, 1941. They had a long and happy marriage and were inseparable until Harry’s death in 2005.

In the 1960s, Maye and her two sisters, Bonnie and Margaret, were ahead of their time when they started and successfully operated women’s clothing “Outlets” in Flora, Olney, and Cisne, until their retirement.

Maye also had a passion for playing cards of any kind and was very competitive up until the week of her passing.

Maye was preceded in death by her loving husband; her daughter, Donna Carrell (Charlie); her mother and father; sisters Bonnie Wieldt and Virginia Willis; and brothers Robert and Harold Mitchell.

Maye is survived by her son, Kye Richard Hemphill (Lori); her daughter, Rita Kay Etscheid (Wylie); her sisters, Margaret Duke and Margie Yingst; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service for Maye Hemphill will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora, with Pastor Bruce Horsley officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial donations are suggested to Clay County Hospice.
