  He was a route salesman for 41 years with Prairie Farms. He spent 21 years of service in the National Guard. He was a farmer, an avid fisherman, a lover of Gospel music, and a woodworker. He held numerous leadership positions at Mt. Gilead Church, where he was a member for his entire life. For many years, Russell toured and recorded with The Harmonaires, a Southern Gospel group.
