1679 | Criss went to school in Xenia and Flora, IL. He competed his junior and senior year in Syracuse, KS, where he met his wife Nancy Jo Hubbard. They were married Sept. 19, 1981. They lived in Goodland where he earned a degree in carpentry from NWKS Area Vo-Tech. Criss built houses and fine cabinetry for a few years and then went to MMI in Phoenix and earned a degree in motorcycle mechanics. He then went on to DCP Helium Corp. in Liberal and worked there for 25 years. He also worked at SWCO road and bridge and as a sexton at Restlawn Cemetery. He loved caring for the flowers, and grass which he kept in pristine condition, earning him many heartfelt compliments. He loved the solace and peace that the work brought and the friendships he made working there. Criss loved bass fishing in the lakes of Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. He loved riding his Harley and took several cross country trips. He loved the comradery of the riders whether in the Harley dealership or on rides. Of course most of his time was spent among his beloved family and friends. He was always volunteering to help his kids, friends, and strangers with any task they needed help with. She assisted her husband farming, worked at Four Sisters Garment Factory, was a local Electrolux and Tupperware representative and was a member of Brown Christian Church in Kinmundy. Cubalene loved her church, family and music. She is survived by a son: Gary E. Krutsinger; a daughter: Judy E. Young; eight grandchildren: Robin Niehaus, Kim Comparetto, Krys Baer, Scott Hockman, Rhonda Hodge, Lora Sloan, Lisa Miller, Wade Young; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister: Mildred Brown. 1683 | Curtis W. Ross, 72, of Oblong, Illinois passed away at 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong. Born in Clay City, Illinois on November 5, 1941, he was the son of Paul Clifford Ross and Genell Effie (Winchester) Ross. On September 5, 1941, he married Sandra Lee Jenkins and she survives. Curtis owned and operated Ross Oil Company from 1970 to 2005 when Curtis sold the business to his brother-in-law Jack Jenkins. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Oblong; Robinson Elks Lodge #1188; Illinois Oil and Gas Association; and member of the Oblong Oil Field Museum. Curtis enjoyed raising cattle, working in the oil field and working and supporting his church where he was an elder for many, many years. 1686 | D.W. was born in Wellston, Ohio on October 1, 1922, the oldest son of David Wesley Harry, Sr. and Lucille (Davis) Harry. He graduated from Clay City Community High School with the Class of 1940 receiving awards for penmanship and accounting. After high school, he traveled daily from Clay City to Olney where he worked as a general clerk/ delivery boy at a grocery store. On one of his deliveries of groceries to a local family, he met a young lady from Oklahoma of whom he would later marry. On November 2, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, D. W. enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. That same year he graduated boot camp with the 1026th Platoon in San Diego, Ca. He was stationed for a short time at Marine Corps Air Station in El Centro, California. Technical Sgt. Harry received specialized training in: Aviation Machine Mate at Memphis, TN.; Aerial Gunner at Purcell, OK; Combat Air crewman at Cherry Point, NC. His specialties were that of Mechanic Gunner, Mechanic Turret Gunner and Mechanic Air. During his time in the Marines, he flew with the Bombing Squadron VMB 443 in a PBJ Mitchell B25 and operated the top turret gun. Squadron VMB 443 flew missions in the Bismark Archipelago area, concentrating on the areas of Emirau and Rabaul. In December 1945, TSgt. Harry was honorably discharged and awarded: the Air Medal in connection with military operations against the enemy Japanese forces in the Bismarck Archipelago area from December 10 thru 31, 1944; World War II Victory Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; Rifle - MM Badge; Honorable Service Lapel Pin (Ruptured Duck) and the USMC Discharge Button. The young lady that he met while delivering groceries years earlier was Annabett J. Whitten and on March 27, 1943 they were married at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN. During more than 64 years together, they lived in numerous states but finally called Wyoming "home". D. W. worked numerous jobs in various states in the oil and gas fields. He retired from Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU) a subsidiary of the Williston Basin Interstate Pipeline. His family said that D. W. enjoyed writing poetry, hunting, fishing, boating, camping, horses and his specialty "tinker-ritis". He also had a love for listening to old time music and traveling. His dream was to become a "professional tourist" in his senior years. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Masons, Veterans Association, and the Friday - Traun Marine Corp League, Detachment #683. While living at New Horizons, he kept staff and residents entertained with his yodeling. It was there that he met an EMT by the name of Todd Nunn who befriended D. W. They developed a special friendship, were always talking about flying and on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 a dream came true for D. W. In celebration of his 88 th birthday, he was able to take flight in a vintage 1947 Aeronca L-16A Champion airplane courtesy of Lovell pilot Todd Nunn. On Tuesday, July 3, 2012, D. W. had another dream realized when Jack and Diane Martin of the Cody Patriots arranged for Veterans to fly in "Grumpy" a B-25 from the World War II era. 1690 | Dale Bissey, 79, of Tuscola, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2005 at his home. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 20th, from 5 p.m. To 7 p.m. at Hilligoss-Shrader, 705 S. Main Street in Tuscola. The memorial service will be held Wednesday the 21st at 11 a.m., also at Hilligoss-Shrader. Mr. Bissey was born in Clay County, Illinois on November 11, 1926 to Henry Roland and Versa Zimmerman Bissey. From 1944 to 1947, Mr. Bissey served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant. He attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Mr. Bissey also attended St. Norbert College in West DePere, Wisconsin, Virginia Military Institute, and the University of Michigan. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After receiving his business degree, Mr. Bissey accepted a position at Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, where he worked for four years. On September 9, 1956, Mr. Bissey established his own business, Bissey's Sales & Service in Tuscola. For 49 years, the business provided gasoline, tires and vehicle service to citizens of Tuscola, Douglas County, and the surrounding area. In previous years, Mr. Bissey was a member of the Kiwanis Club and served as both Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church. An outdoor enthusiast, Mr. Bissey took his family on summer vacations throughout the United States and Canada, including a six week trip to Alaska in 1965. Hiking, camping and exploring remote areas were among his greatest pleasures. Survivors include his wife, Mary, and their four children: Patricia Greaves of San Patricio, New Mexico; Randy Bissey of Houston, Texas; Donna Ralph of Zurich, Switzerland; and Brad Bissey of Denver, Colorado; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Jack Bissey of Florence, Alabama; and five sisters: Eula Skelton of Flora, Illinois; Edith Reinerd of Mexico, Missouri; Audrey Weiler of Clay City, Illinois; Doris Sanders of Quincy, Illinois; and Lola James of Tewksbury, Massachusetts. He married Ruth Ann Perry on June 16, 1951 in Flora. She preceded him in death on December 19, 2001. He served during WWII in the U.S. Navy and retired after 30 years as a U.S. Postal employee. He was a member of First Christian Church in Flora, the Beau Knot Sunday School Class of the church, and held several positions in the church including being an elder, deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and the bus ministry. Dale enjoyed reading and was an avid Cubs fan. He is survived by 3 daughters: Janet S. Graham; Delberta Bowen, Donna K. Hartke, and Sherrill Pruitt of Flora; one sister: Alyne White; twelve grandchildren & twelve great-grandchildren. 1695 | Dale F. McKnight, 90, of Olney, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Lavender Ridge in Olney. Dale was born on September 30, 1927 in Hobart, IN, the son of Morris and Mary (Bryant) McKnight. He married Bonnie C. Runyon on March 4, 1949 in Kentucky. She preceded him in death on July 17, 2000. Dale was a hardworking and well respected farmer in Richland Co.. He enjoyed deer hunting with friends and listening to classic country and gospel music. Dale also took pleasure in carpentry work during the winter months. He was a dog lover and would take his dogs into the field with him. Early on he raised livestock and was a great caretaker to his animals. Dale was a faithful Christian and member of the Olney Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed visiting with his family and looked forward to spending time with his family from up North. Dale was a US Navy Veteran during WW II. Dale is survived by his son, Allen D. 1698 | Dale Stanford, age 69, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at Clay County Hospital in Flora. Dale was born August 15, 1948, in Flora, the son of the late Roger Eugene Stanford and the late Alva Joyce Benskin. He married Joan Miller on September 4, 1983, in Clinton, New Jersey. He was a 1966 graduate of Clay City High School. Dale retired from the U.S. Army in 1974, having served in Vietnam and Germany. He earned certificates in heating and air for tractor trailer reefers and in diesel mechanics. He worked for himself, driving a truck for Stanford Transporters. Dale was a member of the American Legion, VFW, NMN Club, and Chapter 32 International Tractor Club. He attended McCabe General Baptist Church and was an expert at identifying country music songs. Dale was passionate about working on, showing, and talking about his tractors, including his M and H Farmall models, his Farmall Super A, and an International 806, as well as 3 Case tractors, and another he was hoping to begin restoring soon. He was also a collector of diecast toys, including trucks, tractors, and road equipment. He is survived by his wife: Joan Stanford; a sister: Colene Wood and her son, Casey Jay Wood and daughter, Kassie Joetta Wood and granddaughter Harper; the children of Dales late brother, Bradley Stanford: Bradley Allen Stanford, Crystal Lynn Lancaster, and Amber Jo Stanford; brother: Perry (Kathy) Stanford and his family; brother: Donald Stanford and his family; an aunt: Marjorie Murbarger and her family; sister-in-law: Kathleen Miller; brother-in-law: Edward (Susan) Miller and their sons Brian Miller and Craig (Paula) Miller, and their daughters Ashlyn and Addison; brother-in-law: Donald (Nancy) Miller and their daughter Christina Herndon; along with many cousins of Dale and Joan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Bradley. A funeral service for Dale Stanford will be held 11 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with military honors presented at the conclusion of the service. A visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
