- MRS. SOPHIA B. LEE OF MAGNOLIA
IS LAID TO REST FRIDAY
Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon for Mrs. Sophia Belle Lee, of Magnolia, who had passed away shortly after midnight, Wednesday, May 23, 1957, at St. Margaret's hospital, Spring Valley, IL, where she had been a patient since May 6, death being due to the complications of advanced age.
A brief preliminary service of Scripture and prayer was held at 1:30 Friday afternoon at the Boose Funeral home in Henry, IL, from where the cortege left for further services at the Magnolia Community Methodist Church at 2:30, and interment rites in the family lot in Magnolia cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside her husband, who passed away almost 18 years ago.
Rev. G. D. Landes, pastor of the Magnolia church, officiated at the services.
Mrs. Lee, for 27 years a resident of the Magnolia community, was a native of OH, born March 23, 1877, near the village of McArthur in that state.
She was the youngest and last survivor of five children of Pearlie and Susan Patterson Hawk, the elder ones being a brother, Beecher A. Hawk, who passed away September 22, 1928; a sister, Nora, who also preceded her in death many years ago at the age of 16; and twin sisters, who died in infancy.
She had the misfortune of losing her parents of a very early age, her father six weeks before she herself was born, of a disability incurred in army service, during the Civil War; and her mother when she was but a year and a half of age. She was then taken to the home of her paternal grandparents at Clay City, IL, where she grew to young womanhood, living with the grandparents until her grandmother passed away in 1888, and from then on until her marriage, with an aunt, Mrs. Christa Lucas, also at Clay City, IL.
Her marriage to Charles Oscar Lee of Clay City took place there on JUne 5, 1895.
All four of the couple's children were born in the Clay City community. In 1920, the family moved from there to Lebanon, OH, and in 1930 to the Magnolia community, where they have made their home ever since, on a farm just north of the village. It was there that Mr. Lee passed away on their 44th wedding anniversary, June 5, 1939.
Since then, she and her younger son, Carroll, have continued to make their home there, until a recent hospitalization at Spring Valley became necessary, and she slept peacefully away early Wednesday morning, at the age of 80 years, 1 month, and 29 days.
Left to mourn her passing and to revere the memory of a kind and loving mother, a thoughtful, generous, and helpful friend and neighbor, and a sincere Christian woman who spent many hours of loving labor for her church and especially its Sunday School -- she taught for many years in it until failing health made it necessary for her to retire, are her four children: Vonnie Edens (Mrs. August) Larson of Cornell, Genelle (Mrs. Ray) Walden of Mattoon and Leslie and Carroll of Magnolia; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; some other relatives in other communities; and a host of friends who will miss her greatly.
All her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were present for Friday's services, as well as several members of the Lee relationship from the Lostant-Tonica area, including Mrs. Minnie Lee and her sons, Frank, Marion, and Willis, and her daughter Mrs. LaVerne Wiesbrock, and their respective families.
