- Notes from Jillaine Smith:
"Researchers working on this branch should be very careful if they are relying on information obtained prior to March 2004-- even official information from the town of Schwenningen. An error made by transcribers in Schwenningen as far back as 1810 resulted in the town of Schwenningen sending out incorrect information to researchers. This information, containing as it did the official seal of Schwenningen, was taken as accurate for many years. Research conducted on the microfilmed church records (births, marriages, deaths) by Jillaine Smith and confirmed by Axel Bauder in early 2004 resulted in finding this error, but it may not be corrected in all places.
The error can be traced back to Schwenningen Family Registry, Volume I (FHL #1658747, Band 24). This volume records Jacob Jauch b. 31 Dec 1729 TWICE (I-112 and I-122), but only one of them is correct (I-122).
Closer examination reveals that there are TWO Jakob Jauchs (J1 and J2), sons of TWO different Christian Jauchs (C1 and C2), married to TWO different ANNAs (A1 and A2), who got mixed up in early Schwenningen record-keeping-- specifically whene first family registries were created back about 1810. The correct information (with associated source information) is:
J1. Jakob Jauch, b. 31 Dec 1729 (FHL #1658743, Band 1, Baptisms, p. 270: parents: Christian Jauch (C1) and Maria Burckh). Dies 15 December 1812.
Familienbuch Vol I-112 (Band 24) says the Jakob Jauch born 1729 is son of Christian Jauch (C2) and Anna Jaeckle (incorrect; their son was born in 1732). The Jakob who married Anna Schneckenburger in 1762 was born in March 1732 (J2). Thed on this Vol I-112 (Band 24) are actually the children of J2 and A2.
Familienbuch V-122 (Band 24) is the correct family page for the "J1" Jakob (b. 31 Dec 1729), and accurately documents that this Jakob (J1) is son of Christian Jauch (C1) and Maria Birk (married 1715) and that he married in 1756 Anna Haus)f Hanss Martin Hausser and Ottilia Schlenker). The church marriage record (FHL #1658745 - Marriages 1756, pp. 81-82) says: 27 Jan 1756: Jakob Jauch, son of Christian Jauch; marries Anna, daughter of Hanss Martin Hausser.
Furthermore, the 22 March 1773 birth of daughter Anna Jauch (FHL INTL Film 1658743 Items 3-6, page 180) indicates that her parents were Jacob Jauch and Anna Hausser. Her father Jacob is referred to as "Heitl sohn" (son of Heitl)
The 1756 marriage record of Jacob Jauch and Anna Hausser (Schwenningen Evangelische Kirche, FHL #1658745, Marriages 1756, p. 81-82) indicates that Jacob's father is Christian Jauch, nicknamed Heitl or Hirtl. This Christian Jauch, again identifd with a nickname of "Heitl", dies in 1757 at the age of 68y 4m 10d (FHL INTL Film 1658745, page 171), placing his birth 24 Aug 1688.
J2. Jakob Jauch, b. 23 March 1732 [FHL #1658743, Band 1, Baptisms, p. 277:] parents: Christian Jauch (C2) and Anna Jaeckle (their marriage is found in 1726). Jakob Jauch (J2) married in 1762 (Schwenningen Evangelische Kirch, FHL #1658745, Marrages 1762, p. 103) Anna Schneckenburger (A2), dau of Johannes Schneckenburger and Ursula Moench of Beisingen. FHL #1658745, Marriages 1762, p. 103: 22 Sep 1762: Jakob Jauch, weber, son of Christian Jauch, bauer; marries Anna, daughter of Johannes Schneckenburger. Additional evidence may be found through this death record: The Jacob Jauch who died on 27 March 1783 (FHL INTL Film 1658745, Deaths, page 126/127) was identified as a weaver and "kaelberhirth" (cowboy), and his age at his death was 51y, 4 d, placing his birth in March 1732.
The 26 Oct 1769 birth of a son Jacob Jauch (FHL INTL Film 1658743 Items 3-6, page 149) identifies his parents as Jacob Jauch, weber and kaelberhirth (cowboy), and Anna Schneckenburger. That means that weaver and cowboy Jacob was born in 1732d married Anna Schneckenburger in 1762 (and died in 1783).
I discarded the possibility that these were the same Jakob with two different, sequential wives because the births of the children overlap, and Anna Hausser does not die until 1797, well after the 1762 marriage of Jakob Jauch to Anna Schneckenbger (and I have seen no evidence of divorce in this town at this time). To underscore that they are not two different wives of the same Jakob:
* The children of Anna Hausser are born between 1756 and 1765 (if I'm reading FR I-122 correctly).
* The children of Anna Schneckbenburger are born between 1762 and 1776 (FR I-112).
He married Anna Hausser, married 27 Jan 1756 in Schwenningen, Wurttemberg, b. 15 Dec 1729 in Schura or Schwenningen, Wurttemberg, (daughter of Johann Martin Hausser and Otillia Schlenker) d. 14 Feb 1797 in Schwenningen. There is a faint notatn on their family page (Band 24, FR vol I, #122), underneath the names of Jakob's parents. Return to film and try to decipher." (END OF QUOTE)
