- He served with Company B, 145th Indiana Infantry, Cartersville, Georgia, during the Civil War. Spencer died as the result of a fall from a train. He hemmoraged to death when they got him back to camp in Cartersville, Georgia. He was intered at Cartersville Cemetery until they opened the National Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia, where he was re-intered.
