Notes |
- Nathaniel Rusher, age 17, son of Charles & Rhoda Rusher, Oskaloosa Twp. Co. A 98th Illinois Infantry. Killed in troop train accident at Bridgeport, Illinois September 8, 1862, body returned to Oskaloosa for burial. Was in the Army 5 days.
He was born in Indiana, the son of Charles & Rhoda Rusher. He came to Clay County with his family when he was about ten years old. The war started when Nathaniel was 16 years old.
He went to Flora and enlisted in the Company of Capt. Enoch P. Turner, a local businessman. He took the train to Centralia, IL and was mustered in. At that time he was 17 years old & Had become a part of Co. A 98th IL Infantry.
On Sept. 8, 1862, the Regiment was ordered to Louisville, KY and left by train for that destination. At about 9 p.m. that night as the train approached Bridgeport, IL, another train had taken the passing track to allow the Troop train to continue. Evidently a switch had been left open & the troop train ran in on the passing track & a terrible wreck was the result.
