- Elsie Bryan Covey, 89, of Effingham, IL formerly of Flora, IL died at 4:55 AM Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Evergreen Nursing & Rehab Center in Effingham, IL.
She was born on April 30, 1920 to Emerson & Grayce (Spain) Williams in Vera, IL where she was raised and lived.
She married Harold Max Bryan in 1940 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded her in death in 1977. She later married Howard Hucker in 1985 and he preceded her in death in 1994. She then married Donald Covey in 1995 in Clarksville, TN and he preceded her in death on March 3, 2009.
She was a homemaker and as a young lady she worked at the Vandalia Motel in Vandalia, IL, and later worked at the Ranch Steak House, Hobbs Grocery and the Flora Twsp. High School cafeteria, all in Flora.
Elsie's favorite color was red and she enjoyed dancing. When married to Max, they moved with the oil business to St. Elmo, Mowequa, Sebree, KY and Flora.
While married to Howard, they had a cabin on the Wabash River and spent the winters at Lake Conroe in Conroe, TX.
When married to Don, she traveled with him when he went to shows to judge rabbits.
Her memberships included First United Methodist Church of Flora, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and Eastern Star. She was a charter member of the Trago Lake Association where they enjoyed fishing, and was a member of Lucky Ramblers where the favorite thing was to host family reunions and holiday events.
She is survived by her children: Bill Bryan of Houston, TX, Jill (Bill) McDonald of Evansville, IN, Jan (Alan Peterson) Bryan of Springfield, IL; step-children: Carol (Wes) Osborn of Effingham, Michael (Shayla) Covey of Rockford, Shelley (Rick) Wolter of Steeleville, Kevin Covey of Manteca, CA; 2 daughters-in-law: Ulanda Bryan & Jan Craig Bryan both of Clinton, IL; 8 grandchildren & 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all 3 husbands, 1 son (James Max Bryan), 1 brother (Ellis Williams), and 1 sister (Hazel Griffin).
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday (May 1, 2010) at Frank & Bright Funeral Home with a graveside service following at 2 PM at South Hill Cemetery in Vandalia, IL. Pastor Roosevelt Smith will officiate. Visitation will be after 9:30 AM until time of service on Saturday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Heritage Woods Activity Fund and may be received at the funeral home.
