William Franks enlisted in Co. B, 11th Kentucky Calalry July 16,1862 in Grant Co. at age 33. He was mustered into Federal Service Sept.22,1862 in Louisville, Ky. for a term of three years. He served with his regiment until Jan. 8, 1863 when he was on "detachment duty in Gallatin, Tenn." On Jan. 20,1863, he deserted his regiment. Records do not show a listing of his return, but he was with his regiment in Georgia in July 1864 when he was captured. He was held in Confederate prisons until Feb.26,1865, when he was released at Wilmington, North Carolina.He then traveled to the Union Paroled Prisoner Camp in Maryland where he was placed in Hospital #1. He was sent from Maryland to Cincinnati, Ohio, and was on his way to Louisville when he died aboard the Steamer General Buell of remittent fever on March 23,1865.
