  	Graduate of the University of Illinois, he enlisted in the Naval Reserves as a Seaman 2nd Class in August 1941. Appointed an Aviation Cadet, he completed his flight training at Naval Air Station (NAS) in Pensacola, Florida in June 1942 and was appointed as Naval Aviator (heavier than air) number 15328.
