  She graduated from New Harmony, Indiana High School in 1954. Jan received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University in 1958 and 1963, respectively. While attending Indiana University, Jan met her future husband. She and Ronald K. Bell were married on May 31, 1959. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2009. Jan was, both professionally and personally, a lifelong educator and servant. She began teaching in the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville in 1958. In 1992, she formally retired from her professional career as a teacher, but she continued her service via various volunteer opportunities through her church, the Martinsville First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member for over fifty years.
