DEAF MAN KILLED BY PENNSY TRAIN
Reno Arrowsmith, Detroit, Victim; Mute Companion Jumps to Safety.
-- Reno Arrowsmith, 35, deaf and mute, who resided in Detroit, was killed about 8:30 Thursday morning when struck by Pennsylvania passenger train No. 537 while he was walking with another man who could not hear or speak, Clayton Mills, also of Detroit, near Fisher Station.
-- Arrowsmith and his companion had been in Grand Rapids and were planning to board a freight train for Chicago to visit Arrowsmith's wife.
-- The companion said he did not see the approaching train, but leaped from the tracks when he felt the vibrations. Mills was too far away from Arrowsmith to warn him; although the latter apparently felt the vibrations just before he was struck because he attempted to leap from the tracks.
-- The body was taken to the Clarence D. Sullivan mortuary.
Note:
Reno was one of the original founders of DAD-
Detroit Association of the Deaf Club-1916
- DAD is one of the oldest U.S. established deaf organizations based in Detroit, Michigan.
