- He was a 1938 graduate of Bridgeport High School. In 1941, he began working for Texaco Oil Company in Southern Illinois.
In 1942, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. He participated in North Africa; Salerno, Italy; and Normandy, France invasions.
After leaving the navy in 1946, he returned to work in Southern Illinois for Texaco. In 1953 he was transferred to the Mt. Vernon Texaco terminal where he retired in 1981 after 40 years of service.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and American Legion Post #5 of Mt. Vernon.
