10101 Theodore (Ted) Bayler, 66 of Tonica, a native of near Clay City, died Saturday in the People’s Hospital at Peru, Illinois

Funeral services were held at Tonica with burial there.

He was born in Clay County on March 7, 1905, the son of Isaac and Cora Bayler, who preceded him in death. He was a resident of LaSalle County for 49 years, and was a member of the Tonica United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; one son, Ted Jr., a coach at Tonica High School; three daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Edna) Baker, Tonica, Mrs. Max (Dorothy) Halberg, Princeton, and Mrs. Thomas (Lucille) Moore, Streator; 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Robert Stanford, Clay City, and Miss Linnie Bayler, Flora; two brothers, Leo, McLeansboro, and John D., Fairfield; and an aunt, Miss Dora Hough, Flora.

10103 Theora Rosalie Stiff, 97, of Dundas, passed away on March 4, 2017 at Helia Healthcare in Olney.

Theora was born on the family farm in Rafetown, IL on May 14, 1919. She was the only child of Jess R. and Edith L. (Seiler) Williams. She married Eugene Merritt Stiff on February 1, 1941 in Union, MO. He preceded her in death on October 4, 2011 after 70 years of marriage.

Theora was an active member and youth leader at the Dundas Methodist Church until it closed in 1973 and she and her husband joined the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney. She was a farm wife, homemaker, loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Walden and husband Wayne of Mt. Carmel; grandsons, Chris Walden and wife Allison of Mattoon; and Chad Walden and wife Sarah of Brownsburg, IN; great-grandchildren, Ely, Stella, Hadleigh, and Hampton; caregivers, Sue Holland and Linda Hanes; and two nieces and a nephew.

Theora was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son, Larry Gene and infant great-granddaughters, Teigan and Tinsley Walden.

10104 Theoren Gould, merchant, Bible Grove. Among the wide-awake business men of Clay County must be classed Mr. Gould. He was born July 10, 1842, in Edwards County, Ill.; son of Philander Gould, a native of New York, and a farmer by occupation. The mother of our subject was Sarah (Knowlton) Gould, a native of Virginia, she died in Edwards County,Ill. She was the mother of ten children, all living.

Our subject was educated in Edwards County. In early life he farmed, and at the age of nineteen entered the army, enlisting in the fall of 1861, and served faithfully till he was wounded at Jackson, Miss., when he was honorably discharged and returned home. While in the army, he participated in the battle of Shiloh, siege of Corinth, Vicksburg and other engagments. He was a Sergeant.

After the war Mr. Gould engaged in farming and stock-dealing, owning now over 600 acres in this and adjoining counties. Between 1878 and 1880, he opened the Bible Grove Grist Mill, and bought D. D. C. Pixley's general merchandising store in Georgetown, where he now does a thriving business. Mr. Gould was joined in matrimony May 25, 1865, to Miss Nancy A. Webster, who was born January 23, 1848 in Clay County, Ill. She is a daughter of Anderson and Sarah (Fulk) Webster.

Five children blessed this union, viz.: Chloe F., born June 4, 1866; Charley A., born June 10, 1868; Philander, born February 24, 1872; Sarah E., born February 23, 1877, she died September 26, 1879; and Lola G., born October 31, 1881.

Mrs. Gould is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Gould is an A. F. & A. M., also an I. O. O. F.. and is at present, Commander of the G. A. R. Post.

10145 This is my Dad Hartzel Powell. As a young man in the 7th grade he quit school to support his mother and siblings due to the tragic death of his step father. Imagine this as a youngster supporting his mother and family. He worked for Tubby Gregory in Alma, Illinois plowing for I believe .75 a day to help support his mother and her family. My father like all of you alls have left us so blessed!! Their legacy lives on through all your families!! He taught us to shoot and respect a gun. Be respectful and he wanted and worked hard so all his children were well educated! We are truly blessed!

Hartzel L. Powell, 81, of Clay City, IL, died July 20, 1996, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN.

He was born February 19, 1915, in Colfax. He married Mona Shreffler March 22, 1948, in Henderson, KY.

He was the owner and operator of Powell's Patch Strawberries in Clay City for many years. He worked for the Texas Pipeline Company, retiring in 1977 after 39 years. He was a farmer, a member of the American Legion in Clay City and a lifetime member of the VFW Post #3999. He was a World War II veteran.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Steve and Lowell Powell; two daughers, Sandra Kraft and Sherry Hall; two brothers, Virgil and Vernon Powell; three sisters, Violet Widdows, Veretta Garrett, and Viola Huff; eight grandchildren; and a step-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, a daughter and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Kinmundy.

There were full military rites at the cemetery.

10149 Thomas Adam "Tom" Buerster was born January 7, 1938 in Clay Co., IL to Adam Carl and Monica Margaret (Kuenstler) Buerster. He married Martha (Weishaar) Buerster on June 13, 1964 in Island Grove, IL. She survives him in his death.

Tom was a 50 year member of the Ste. Marie American Legion Post #932 and Knights of Columbus Third Degree Member Council #1704 Newton and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wendelin.

Tom enlisted in the US Army Reserve in 1960 and served six years. He was a lifelong farmer and had helped with the family trucking business from 1953-1968. During the winters he would work at Newton Implement setting up equipment. Tom also served on the Denver Twp. and Richland County Boards. He served on various committees at the Holy Cross Church.

Tom enjoyed trapshooting and talking on the CB with the handle "Sugar Foot". He especially enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids and taking walks with his dog, Roxy.

Thomas Adam "Tom" Buerster is survived by wife of 57 years, Martha Buerster of Noble; daughter, Joan Weber and husband John Carey of Mason, IL; son, Kenneth Buerster and wife Karen of Newton, IL; son, Alan Buerster and wife Krista of Noble, IL; daughter, Janet Grunloh and husband John V. of Island Grove, IL; son, Gary Buerster of Newton, IL and special friend Lindsey Tompson; daughter, Joyce Dietrich and husband Shane of Geneseo, IL; grandchildren, Lauren (Seth) Michels, Alicia Buerster, Ryan Buerster, Malorie Buerster, Maison Buerster, John A. Grunloh, Josie Grunloh, Monica Buerster, Drew Buerster, Darci (Ethan) Harrison, Heather Dietrich; brother, Paul Buerster; sisters, Mary Jane Keller and Theresa Ritz; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; grandson, Eric Dietrich; sisters, Edith McDonald, Anna Lou Stone, Rita Proctor, and infant sister, Eunice Buerster.


Kistler-Patterson Funeral Home in Olney is in charge of arrangements. A Visitation will be held on November 29, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wendelin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on November 30, 2021 at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Interment will take place following services at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Full Military Rites will be performed at the Graveside.

10150 Thomas Ausbrook was an early pioneer settler in southern Illinois. Born the son of Michal Ozbrooks and Sarah (Crickman) Ozbrooks at Warren County, Kentucky, near present day Bowling Green, KY. His father Michal was a "long hunter" and during one of his trips in early 1813 was believed to have died. Thomas was born to Sarah, believed to have been a widow on 13 April 1813, and they remained in Warren County for several succeeding months. On 13 October 1813 Sarah married a widower named Jacob Tinker. In the "History of Fayette County, IL." it states that Thomas Osbrooks came to Fayette County in 1829 with his stepfather Jacob Tinker. After taking up farm land in Otego Township, Fayette County, Illinois and working it for more than two years, Thomas volunteered in 1832 for federal military service with Captain Ewing's Spy Brigade during the "Black Hawk Indian War" serving as a Corporal during the conflict. Upon his release from military service he relocated to Clay County, Illinois where he acquired farm land in Stanford Township. Nearly two years later, 13 February 1834, he was married to Alcey Ann Apperson, daughter of Richard Apperson and Margaret S, (Aiken) Apperson at Clay City, Illinois. To this union eight children were born: Alfred G.(1836-1847); John M. 1840-1913); Sarah R.(1843-1844);Julia M. (1846-1901); William T. (1848-1853); Gilbert A. (1852-1892);Alice M. (1861-1882)and James M. (1853-1916). Thomas farmed his land in Stanford Township until the death of his wife in 1888 at which time he moved into Clay City with his daughter and son-in-law Julia and Harvey T. Barre.
